Sartoria Tofani

For more than seventy years, the Tofani family has made suits for men one client at a time. In Naples, the work begins with the person who will wear the garment.

1954

It began with a young tailor learning from a master.

Aristide Tofani learned his craft with Vincenzo Attolini.

Years later, he opened Sartoria Tofani in Naples.

That was 1954.

What followed was a family learning the same trade.

Today, Davide, Enea, Ginevra and a younger Aristide continue the work on Via Monte di Dio.

The workroom

A bespoke jacket cannot be understood on a hanger.

The fabric is marked and cut. The jacket is assembled with temporary basting stitches and tried on before it is finished. The tailor studies how it sits on the body and adjusts the garment where necessary. Only then does the hand-sewing continue.

Via Monte di Dio

This is where the work happens.

Via Monte di Dio 3c. Naples. Clients come here to be measured and fitted. Fabric is cut here. Jackets wait here between fittings. The people making the garments work here.

Bespoke

The man comes before the pattern.

Nothing is taken from a rail.

A ready-made jacket begins with a size. A bespoke jacket begins with a person. His proportions. The way he stands. The way he moves. The fabric he chooses. From there, the garment begins to take shape. It is fitted. Adjusted. And fitted again.

The wardrobe

Before there is a suit, there is a fabric.

The choice of fabric changes everything that follows. Its weight. Its texture. Its drape. The way the finished garment will feel and move. Fabric is chosen with the client before it reaches the cutting table. From Italian and English mills, Sartoria Tofani makes bespoke suits, jackets and trousers. Each commission begins with a different person. No two need begin in exactly the same way.

Private appointments

Come to the workshop.

If you are considering a bespoke garment, the best place to begin is where the work is done.

For clients outside Naples, include your city when you contact the workshop. When several clients request an appointment from the same location, Sartoria Tofani may arrange sittings there.
